IUR Researchers at AAG Annual Meeting 2025

Nine IUR members are in Detroit for the week at the American Association of Geographers (AAG) annual meeting. We look forward to welcoming them back next week and hearing more about their discussions and takeaways!

–Carina Listerborn will present a paper: “Between smart housing and home. EU funded climate smart interventions in Swedish public housing” in the session “Towards Equity: Housing, Climate, and Energy Justice for Sustainable Future Cities 1” on March 25th. In the same session, Guy Baeten, Edgar Sarmulis, and Defne Kadioglu will present “Between normalization and prefigurative urbanization: housing and energy renovations in the Free Town of Christiania, Copenhagen.”

–Hoai Anh Tran will present “The KTT cafés: creative youth spaces in old socialist housing areas in Hanoi” in the session “Informal Sustainability 4: New Approaches to Informality” on March 25th.

–Stephen Marr will present “On the other side of planning failures: centering community expertise in transportation infrastructure development in Detroit’s North End neighborhood” in the session “African Urbanization and US Urbanization in the 21st Century” on March 24th.

–Chiara Valli will chair the book panel for “Class Meets Land: the embodied history of Land financialization” by Maria Kaika and Luca Ruggiero, is organizing the sessions “Exploring Class through Housing 1 & 2” with Ismael Yrigoy, and will present the paper: “Beyond assets and beyond work. Understanding intersectional stratifications in the Swedish debt-sustained housing market.”

–Simone Vegliò will present “International law and the making of Latin America’s political geography: empires, territorial delimitations, and navigation routes. The case of the River Plate basin” with Jorge Murillo in the session “Historical Geographies of Capitalism 2: Circulating Capital” on March 27.

–Jennie Gustafsson and Defne Kadioglu have organized the paper session “The Assetization of Urban Land and Housing together with Mika Hyötyläinen on March 26th (details below).
