CfP: NUPE2025, the 5th Nordic Urban Political Economy Meeting, 11-12 June 2025, Uppsala, Sweden

We cordially invite you to participate in NUPE2025, the 5th annual meeting of the NUPE network (https://nordic-urban.org/nupe2025/). The meeting will take place at the Institute for Housing and Urban Research (IBF), Uppsala University, Sweden.

In an era marked by profound socio-economic shifts, neoliberalization, digitalization, and financialization, the Nordic countries are experiencing significant urban and regional changes. As environmental, economic, and social crises continue to unfold, they offer new opportunities for capitalist extraction, which transform the urban and regional fabrics, reshape the nature of urban life, condition welfare provision, and structures of policy-making while also engendering new forms of political engagement. Though Nordic cities increasingly reflect socio-spatial differentiation and marginalization, growing inequality and de-democratization, there are also signs of growing resistance and social mobilisation.

This NUPE meeting seeks to gather critical insights, empirical contributions, and theoretical explorations that illuminate ongoing trends and their implications, as well as the potential and possibilities for alternative and radical transformation. We invite submissions of papers on a range of topics, particularly – but not limited to – contributions addressing the political economy of housing, the green transition, platform urbanism, and various forms of marginalization and resistance. To enrich the discussions, we encourage the submission of full papers. However, presentations without full papers are also welcome.
