In 2024, the Nordic Network of Global South Urbanisms (NEGSU) officially launched with an ambitious goal: to shake up the field of urban studies. It aims to bring together scholars working to rethink the location, theories, and practices of the field of urban studies. NEGSU seeks to promote cross-Nordic research and collaboration that engages with the global South through an approach that acknowledges historical difference, embodied knowledge, and the existence of a pluriverse of epistemologies. In doing so, the network highlights the importance of presenting the geographies of the global South in more nuanced and rich ways through, but not limited to, critical, postcolonial, decolonial, and feminist approaches. Our purpose is to explore the potential and limitations of:
- Engaging in knowledge production through the global South framework
- Operationalizing paradigms enunciated from the margins to dislocate centers
- Applying concepts and categories from the global South within other contexts such as the global North or global East
- Carrying out comparative work in South-South constellations as well as South-North and South-East
- Developing new methods to engage with actors outside of academia and disrupt traditional forms of knowledge production
