The Institute for Urban Research (IUR) will officially become a Research Center at Malmö University, with a funding allocation of 24 million crowns from 2025 to 2030. This milestone marks the culmination of years of work to bring together all urban research at Malmö University.

The Institute for Urban Research, funded in 2019, has further consolidated the university’s position as a key player in urban studies within the Scandinavian and North European contexts. As a research center, we will continue this important work under Professor Carina Listerborn’s leadership and strive for even greater achievements in the future.
The new Research Center will work towards several long-term goals. These include consolidating the successful existing operations of the IUR, particularly in attracting external research funding, increasing publication output, and fostering cross-departmental research collaboration. Additionally, the Research Center will expand its scope by introducing a unified identity for its research on Urban Justice and reorganizing its structure around four key urban challenges: Housing and Welfare, Green and Just Cities, Global Urbanism, and Urban Humanities. It also plans to establish new methods for collaboration with societal stakeholders, both locally and internationally, through co-creation practices.
The IUR team is excited to embark on this new chapter and looks forward to continuing its work in advancing urban studies at Malmö University and beyond.
