Yvonne Rydin – Post-growth Principles for Urban Regeneration: a thought experiment with the London 2012 Olympic Games legacy
Abstract: Post-growth thinking is a challenging new paradigm for planning that seeks to move away from a form of planning that is both oriented towards and dependent on growth through new urban development. At present, post-growth thinking is still exploring a variety of pathways and its critique is stronger than its proposition. This lecture will use a specific case to conduct a thought experiment on what a post-growth planning future would look like: the urban regeneration claimed by the redevelopment of the main site for London 2012 Olympic Games, now known as Queen Elizabeth Park, and the surrounding intensification of development in Stratford, East London. This thought experiment will provide some clarity as to the implications of a post-growth future for urban regeneration and what this means for urban planning practice.
