I am currently a Senior Researcher at The School of Art and Communication (K3) at Malmö University, and an Affiliated Researcher to the Lund University Center for Middle Eastern Studies (CMES). I hold a BA in Political Science (2005), an MA in International Relations (2005) and a second MA in Middle Eastern Studies (2007). I obtained a Ph.D in History of International Relations from the University of Florence, Italy (2011), with a dissertation on Iran’s relations with the West during the Cold War.

In my role as researcher and instructor at the Lund University Center for Middle Eastern Studies (CMES) (2014-2018), my interest in Middle East history, culture and society went hand in hand with a growing interest in urban studies. Since 2017 I have coordinated a CMES-based umbrella project, Urban transition in the Middle East, and in 2018 I promoted and managed CMES’ affiliation to the International Metropolis Project.

The above efforts resulted in a three-year grant from the Swedish Research Council for a project entitled Resilience in Urban Sudan (RUS): An Interdisciplinary Spatial and Temporal Study of Social Cohesion and Resilience to Tackle the Consequences of Climate and Environmental Change in Urban Khartoum. The project is now hosted by K3 at Malmö University.
