IUR is proud to present the visiting scholars for 2024. Representing diverse backgrounds and areas of expertise, these scholars are set to enrich the institute’s research initiatives and academic endeavours.

Dr. Syeda Jenifa Zahan, a distinguished Urban Studies Foundation Postdoctoral Fellow currently stationed at the Polytechnic of Turin, Italy, will visit the IUR as a visiting scholar from mid-May to mid-June 2024. Jenifa brings with her knowledge of feminist urban geography, with a research focus on smart urbanism, gendered violence, and urban resistance. Her ongoing project in Delhi, India, focuses on the politics of smart interventions in the housing sector. With a doctoral degree from the National University of Singapore, Jenifa will deliver guest lectures and foster lasting networks and collaborations during her tenure at the IUR.

Dr. Miguel A. Montalva Barba is an Assistant professor at the University of Massachusetts Boston. Previously, he held an assistant professorship in Sociology and the Latinx Student Success Faculty Fellowship at the Center of Justice and Liberation at Salem State University. His PhD dissertation (2019) studied White resident narratives of gentrification in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts. He currently studies the racialized narratives that White residents utilize to make sense of racialized extractive practices in Boston. His work aims to infuse the study of urban sociology and the sociology of racism and race. His publications have appeared in journals such as Critical Sociology and Urban.
